Tree ICM with the Fuji X100V

Tree ICM

Over the last week whilst on my village walk I have ended up on the playing field avenue of trees and played with Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) with the Fuji X100V.

I am really enjoying using this camera, its seems that it is never far from my reach and is the camera of choice when I am recording my daily photo journal.

As a mirrorless rangefinder camera with a fixed 23mm prime lens (35mm full frame equivalent) I find it very enjoyable to use.  Its functionality in terms of features is not dissimilar to my Canon Cameras and was one of the main reasons I bought this rather than the new Sony RX100 that has been my camera of choice for a 'point and shoot' for about 10 years.

I stumbled upon this camera via two routes.

1. Ann Miles has one and we have spoken about it a number of times

2. Then I was looking at the Leica Q2 again, I would really like one of these and came across a review (I think) by Ken Rockwell  and he was smitten by the Q2 but bought the X100V

Note: I know the Q2 is full frame and three times the cost probably justifiably and that the X100V is an APS C sensor

After reading the review I spoke with Ann and confirmed that the camera she had was the X100V and the rest is history. I have had the camera since before Christmas and still learning its capabilities.

This set of images makes use of the built in ND filter and this allowed me to use Low shutter speed in reasonably bright light. Its in camera multiple exposure can take up to 9 frames, like the Canon (and Nikons)

On Saturday I was out with the camera club in Ely and only took this camera (Ely Street Photography Blog will follow soon)

I am looking forward to the spring to get out more particularly with this camera.

Wells Next the Sea - To the Woods

Day 4 - Wells Next the Sea - The beach is bordered by a lovely Pine Wood. I decided to walk back to the cafe for a nice cup of tea via the woods. All the photos except the first two photos were taken with the Samyang 7mm Fish eye lens on the Olympus OMD E-M1 mkii which equivalent to 15mm on a full frame camera.

Foggy Toft Road

Foggy morning travelling to Toft in early January. I have often been attracted to the trees and the bend in the road just as you get to the village and as I was a bit early I decided to stop and take some photos. I had my Sony RX100 with me. As luck would have it a person on a bike came down the road to add  'people' interest.

Fast forward to the end of the month, two sources of photographic inspiration (*) promoted me to convert the photos to a high contrast monochrome effect. I like the results, but feel that there is defiantly more work to get the feel I am looking for.

(*) Note the two sources of inspiration were (1) A talk given to the Cambridge Camera Club by one of our members entitled 'The Monochrome Effect by Jayne Odell ARPS', and (2) My visit to the Tate Modern in London to see the 'Radical Eye Exhibition' which is a display of photographs collected by Sir Elton John from about 1910 to 1950. A truly remarkable collection and stunning photographs.

Passenger Seat

Back in early 2016 I purchased a book written by Julianne Kost called Passenger Seat: Creating a Photographic Project from Conception through Execution in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom” is ' clicl HERE to see her blog about it. The images are all from her taken at various times shooting at slow shutter speed out of the passenger seat window.

I have done a few experiment last year but did not blog them. Coming back from Wimpole Hall on Sunday and as Sue was driving I decided to shoot some shots out of the window.

I was shooting with the Olympus OMD EM1 with the f2.8 PRO 12 - 40mm lens. I set the camera to

  • Low ISO (100ISO)
  • Aperture Priority
  • f/22
This meant that the shutter speed would be the slowest I could obtain without any filters. Typically this was about 1/25 sec, there where shots at 8 seconds at one end and 1/80 sec at the other. I will be trying on another journey with a ND filter to get even slower shutter speed.

This blog also ties in with by ongoing Tree Project. I will be posing another blog with images from the Passenger Seat but with Urban Scapes.

Great Fun - you should try it.

I just had to include a selfie ......
