Abney Park Cemetery, London

Abney Park cemetery , one of the Magnificent Seven London cemeteries is situated in Stoke Newington, in the London Borough of Hackney. It was originally parkland developed early 18th century by Lady Mary Abney and Dr. Isaac Watts, and the neighbouring Hartopp family. In 1840 it became a non-denominational garden cemetery

About 197,000 burials have taken place there. In the previous week to when we visited there was another burial.

At the centre is a non-denominational chapel which has seen better days. It is currently boarded up but there are hopes to make the area safe for visitors by the end of next year. Abney Park Cemetery was included on the Heritage at Risk Register in 2009.

The Cambridge Camera Club decided to visit this cemetery. I personally hope to visit some of the other seven cemeteries over the next few years. It is a quiet peaceful area and well worth a visit.

If you are interested the Magnificent Seven Cemeteries are: -

    Kensal Green Cemetery, 1832
    West Norwood Cemetery, 1837
    Highgate Cemetery, 1839
    Abney Park Cemetery, 1840
    Nunhead Cemetery, 1840
    Brompton Cemetery, 1840
    Tower Hamlets Cemetery, 1841
