RAF Upper Heyford - In Mono
This trip Sue and I took dates back to June 2018. It was a Cambridge Camera Club Out and About trip, I cannot remember who organised the trip, but Thank You.

- Opened 1918 by RAF
- Second World War - Occupied by Bomber Command
- During the Cold War chosen to house USAF Air Command (SAC) 1965 - 1966
- From 1966 United States Airforce in Eurpo (USAFE) Tactical reconnaissance
- 1970 F-111 strike aircraft
- September 1994 USAF returned ownership to the British Ministry of Defence
- Site has a home for wildlife, automotive storage, driving activities, boat building ....
- Many buildings still boded up - unclear what will happen
- Several Hardened Shelters were placed on English Heritage List of Scheduled Monuments in 2010
- 2011 Bid made for World Heritage Site failed (Shame :((( )
- Tours are now run by American Personnel - which is how we came to be there :)
I personally enjoyed the trip. We were briefed by the tour guides and then taken on a minibus tour of parts of the site.
I loved the decay and history of the site.
