The First Image .....

As I cannot drive at the moment I am finding it quite nice being chauffeured driven and I get to look out of the window at the countryside. The downside is I get to see all the litter that has been thrown out of cars - 'Why'? 

Anyway I also get to play with my phone camera out of the passenger seat window. 

This image is using the Slow Shutter Speed App and I took a number of images today using this. Sue had to pop into the Farm Shop on the way home and I played with another  phone app called PhotoSplit. Using the multiple exposure template I loaded two of the SlowShutter Speed shots and blended them to give a pleasing 'pastle' result. 

When I got home and imported them into Lightroom and I realised I saved the result twice. I fiddled with both images and on the second image I reduced Texture and Clarity to -100 and achieved a very soft effect. I imported these two versions as layers into photoshop and played around with the blend mode and opacity of the soft image just to add to the pastel effect.

Sue and I popped to Ely today and for a change Sue drove. This gave me a chance of the return journey to take movement photos out of the car window. 

One of my favourite books is 'Passenger Seat' By Julianne Kost and this has been a project of mine for well over 8 years. Slow shutter speed shots out of a car or train window.

I started taking photos as we left Waitrose Car Park. A bright sunny day I needed to use the built in 3 stop ND filter to cut the light down to get a shutter speed around about a half a second with the lowest ISO (160 iso) and smallest aperture (f/16)

As we travelled the sun came through the front window of the car at different angles so the variation in highlights was quite significant, more so at the start of the journey.

All of the images here were taken through the front windscreen except for the one of '3 + 1 Trees'. I decided to leave a bit of the dashboard showing to give context and a base except on a couple of pictures where the dashboard was not unfortunately on the frame.

Back in early 2016 I purchased a book written by Julianne Kost called “Passenger Seat: Creating a Photographic Project from Conception through Execution in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom” is ' clicl HERE to see her blog about it. The images are all from her taken at various times shooting at slow shutter speed out of the passenger seat window.

I have done a few experiment last year but did not blog them. Coming back from Wimpole Hall on Sunday and as Sue was driving I decided to shoot some shots out of the window.

I was shooting with the Olympus OMD EM1 with the f2.8 PRO 12 - 40mm lens. I set the camera to

• Low ISO (100ISO)
• Aperture Priority 
• f/22 

This meant that the shutter speed would be the slowest I could obtain without any filters. Typically this was about 1/25 sec, there where shots at 8 seconds at one end and 1/80 sec at the other. I will be trying on another journey with a ND filter to get even slower shutter speed. 

This blog also ties in with by ongoing Tree Project. I will be posing another blog with images from the Passenger Seat but with Urban Scapes.
