We left Kinsale to travel back to Cork Airport on the last day of our holiday. We visited Cobh
Cobh is on an island in Cork city’s harbour.
It was from here that the RMS Titanic’s last port of call in 1912. It became an embarkation point during Ireland’s mass emigrations.
Until 1920 it was known as Queenstown.
Another tragically associated with the town is the sinking of the Cunard passenger liner RMS Lusitania. This ship was sunk by a German U-boat off the Old Head of Kinsale while travelling from the USA to Liverpool in 1915. The survivors and the dead were brought to Cobh. The Lusitania Peace Memorial is located in Casement Square.
The City has a Cathedral, we did not have time to visit inside the impressive building that dominates the city skyline.
