RAF Upper Heyford - In Mono

This trip Sue and I took dates back to June 2018. It was a Cambridge Camera Club Out and About trip, I cannot remember who organised the trip, but Thank You.

The site is interesting.

According to Wikipedia.

  • Opened 1918 by RAF
  • Second World War - Occupied by Bomber Command
  • During the Cold War chosen to house USAF Air Command (SAC) 1965 - 1966
  • From 1966 United States Airforce in Eurpo (USAFE) Tactical reconnaissance
  • 1970 F-111 strike aircraft
  • September 1994 USAF returned ownership to the British Ministry of Defence
  • Site has a home for wildlife, automotive storage, driving activities, boat building ....
  • Many buildings still boded up - unclear what will happen
  • Several Hardened Shelters were placed on English Heritage List of Scheduled Monuments in 2010
  • 2011 Bid made for World Heritage Site failed (Shame :((( )
  • Tours are now run by American Personnel - which is how we came to be there :)
I personally enjoyed the trip. We were briefed by the tour guides and then taken on a minibus tour of parts of the site.

I loved the decay and history of the site.

This blog is split into threes..

  • This blog - Mono Pictures
  • 2nd - Rust, Cobwebs and Concrete
  • Colour Pictures
Enjoy ....
