Day 3 of our stay in Northumbria we took a boat trip out to the Frane Islands. In the morning we visited Staple Island, the largest island in the 'outer group'. This was my second trip out to these islands, the first being about four years ago. As the boat came up to the island I suddenly remembered the smell. Unless you actually see the islands you cannot imagineer the vast numbers of birds.
On the way in to Staple Island we saw some seals.
Both islands are under the care of the National Trust. There are between 15 and 20 islands depending upon the height of the tide.
You can see more information on Wikipedia here
All the birds are wonderful to see but the Puffin is rather special.
All photos taken with my Canon 5Dmkiv with the Series 2 100-400 lens. Guess who forgot the teleconverter but as it turned out the birds are so close it was sort of unnecessary.
