Washington Old Hall

Spent a great week with 7 other people from the Cambridge Camera Club in Northumberland. Traveling up to Seahouses we stopped at Washington Old Hall. A delightful National Trust property with extremely friendly staff.

Washington New Hall, is situated near Newcastle Gateshead in Tyne and Wear and the site dates from  12th Centre although the building currently dates from the 17th Century.

It is the ancestral home of George Washington, John Washington, Georges Great Grandfather emigrated to America in 1657.

The Hall remained in the Washington Family until 1613 when it passed back to the Bishop of Durham.

The Hall continued to remain as a residence until the early 19th centre when it became tenement flats. It then fell into disrepair and was about to be pulled down in 1937 until Fred Hill a local teacher saved it with 'Friends of Old Hall'. WW2 stopped restoration but restarted and was completed in 1955. It then passed to the National Trust in 1957.
