The Queens House, Greenwich - The Tulip Stairs

The Queens house was designed by Inigo Jones and build between 1616 and 1635.

One of the main reasons for my wanting to go to Greenwich was to see the Tulip Stairs. The following Text is copied form a not at the base of the stairs (see photo 1)

 The Tulip Stairs
"These are the first centrally unsupported stairs in England, copying the Venetian model. The stone treads lock perfectly into each other and the way, requiring no central structure and creating the famous upwards view. The striking wrought-iron rail has been restored to its original small blue. It has long been described as showing tulips but they are probably lilies, the royal flower of France, in compliment to Henrietta Maria".
(Note Henrietta Maria was the wife of Charles 1st)
